The patent for "crystal" in the entire grand duchy:
a request which was denied

Fearing competition from new businesses, in 1825, Francesco Mathis sent a petition to the grand duke of Tuscany, requesting the patent for the production of crystal in the whole grand duchy.
The request was made twice but was refused on both occasions.
At the time the furnace already had over seventy employees.

"14 July 1825
Imperial and Royal Highness, Francesco Mathis, native of Fours in France, department of Nivers, and his Companion domiciled in Tuscany, humble servants and subjects of your Imperial and Royal Highness, with the deepest respect, have represented for the last ten years the only parties to have held open, and to hold open, a crystal factory in the grand duchy, using their own capital and employing over seventy people, who work under their direction, present for the last five years in the town of Colle di Val d'Elsa...

Prostrate before the Royal Throne, the petitioner respectfully implores the grace of a Patent for said production of crystal, for at least five years, valid throughout the entire grand duchy....".
