Towards the end of 1914, while the 'Fabbrichina' closed due to financial
troubles and due to the dreadful recession which hit the glassmaking sector
just before the First World War, the furnace in via dei Fossi reopened,
having been purchased by a company based in Florence.

The new business was called S.A.L.V.E., Società Anonima La Vetreria Elsana
(a joint stock company).
During its first year of business S.A.L.V.E. concentrated its activity mainly
on the production of tubes for oil lamps and lampshades.

In 1916 a Lieutenancy Decree forbade the exportation of tubes for lighting; the
firm was forced to stop production and went back to the classic range of white
glass: glasses, goblets and bottles.
A year later the recession became even worse and exportation ceased altogether.
After the war S.A.L.V.E. continued to scrape a living until March 1922, when
it closed down.
